Ranger 2.3 EcoBoost oil dilution and intake carbon, real problem or forum noise?

about to put a bid on a 2021 Ranger Lariat FX4, 2.3 EcoBoost, 10 speed, 31k, and i have spent two nights reading about two things i want real answers on before i do.

oil dilution. the story is the 2.3 is direct injection, fuel washes past the rings on cold starts and short trips, the oil level goes up instead of down and smells like gas. i see it mostly on the Escape and Fusion 1.5 threads and some on the Ranger. is it a Ranger thing?

carbon. direct injection means nothing washes the back of the intake valves, so at some mileage they coke up, the truck misfires cold, and you pay somebody to walnut blast the head. what mileage on a 2.3, and is it every truck or the short trip trucks?

i tow a 4,000 lb tandem with the ranch stuff on it a few times a month between Hondo and D'Hanis and the rest is highway on 90. not a short trip truck. if these are real i want to know what the fix costs, not whether the internet is scared.

both real, both smaller than the internet. from the shop.

dilution. the 2.3 in the Ranger does it, but the Ranger works the engine harder and hotter than the Escape does, and a truck that tows and runs highway cooks the fuel back out of the oil. the trucks we see with a dipstick above full and a gas smell are the ones that do four miles to work and four miles back in december. your use is the opposite. what i tell Ranger owners: 5W-30, 5,000 miles and not the 10,000 the oil life monitor will let you go, and check the dipstick cold once a month. above the full mark and smells like a gas can, shorten the interval. that is the whole program.

carbon. real on every direct injection engine without port injectors, the 2.3 included. we walnut blast Rangers around 80 to 100k, sometimes later, and the sign is a cold start misfire that clears in thirty seconds. about 600 here. a 31k truck is not there and will not be for years. there is no product you pour in the tank that cleans the back of an intake valve, do not buy one.

the thing i would look at on a 2021 with 31k is the 10R80, the harsh 2-1 downshift coming to a stop, and whether the adaptive learning was ever reset. that is the Ranger thing. not the oil.

for the record the Tacoma 3.5 has both port and direct injectors, Toyota calls it D-4S, and that is why nobody walnut blasts a Tacoma. it is also part of why it costs what it costs used. not a dig at the Ranger, that is the trade.

and the Frontier 3.8 is port injection only, old school, nothing on the valves to worry about, 310 horsepower and no turbo to go wrong. it also gets 18. everybody on this board picked a different problem to live with.

my brother has a 2020 XLT 2.3 with 78k in Victoria and pulls a 16 ft utility with a zero turn on it most weeks. the oil level has never come up, dipstick where it should be at 5k changes. the 10 speed does the clunky downshift the wrench described and he stopped noticing it in a month. with a trailer on, the 2.3 pulls better than my 3.6 Colorado does, the torque is all down low. the ford.com page lists it at 310 lb-ft and it feels like it.

thanks all. the wrench's version is the one i needed: real, manageable, check the dipstick, shorter oil changes, forget about carbon until 80k. i put the bid in. if it lands there will be a thread in the buying board and i will report the dipstick the day i pick it up.
